Friluften invites you to experience and learn in nature.
Using outdoor education, your guide Anders Johansson, takes you on a
hike with outdoor cooking, deep reflection, dialogue and learning about
yourself and the group. You can also learn Outdoor Leadership in an
intensive workshop in the western part of Sweden. You will work
outdoors to both explore processes of leadership and learning in and
out of new landscapes. Through deep reflection you might find out why
the emotions in a group are important and how to create activities that
support positive emotions and learning.
We will also arrange workshops for a day about making tar, charcoal and
handicraft. These things were important for the family economy, now you
have the opportunity to try the techniques and bring some of it back
home. There will be some more experience trips coming up, please check
the web page, www.friluften.se

to meet with beaver, moose or deer. You might also be able to take
pictures of capercaillie or black grouse. There are many small lakes
for fishing or you can learn to climb mountains or paddle a canoe.
Experience what life was like 102 years ago and visit an old forestry
homestead. Learn to light the fire in the tile stove and cook your
supper on the wood stove. Water is fetched from the well outside and

One of the most beautiful waterways in Europe, the Dalsland Canal
connects a labyrinth of large and small lakes and rivers, and idyllic,
meandering canals. Only ten kilometres of the canal is man-made, the
rest is a 240-kilometre navigable system of lakes with a total of 31
locks at 17 different stations.
The canal was completed in 1868 and opened by King Karl XV. One of the
highlights of the canal is at Håverud, a combination of a roadway
bridge, a railway bridge and an aqueduct, an iron channel put together
with 33.000 rivets. The Dalsland Canal is a popular fairway for
pleasure craft, canoes and passenger boats.

Welcome on board M/S "Storholmen", which maintains traffic service on
the Dalslands Canal since 1938. The ship is modernized and tailormade
for the Canal and it's tight locks. However, the charming atmosphere is
preserved. It's capacity is 100 passengers. The scenery of course,
changes during the voyage - untouched nature, modern towns, old mills
and country estates in beautiful settings, bustling life and
picturesque spots.

Dal Västra Värmlands Järnväg is a railway built in the early 20th
century. In those days it connected Mellerud in the south with Arvika
in the north, passing Bengtsfors and Årjäng on the way. The final
journey on the railroad was in 1986, but this only meant a temporary
hold-up for the traffic. The municipalities of Mellerud and Bengtsfors
established the DVVJ Foundation in 1987 and the summer traffic started.
Today this railway of scenic views is one of the foremost tourist
attractions in the region. Endless experiences of bluish mountains and
extended lakes will surround you, since the railway follows alongside
Dalsland Canal. The Årjäng-Bengtsfors route is frequently used by
inspection trolleys, and the southbound traffic from Bengtsfors to
Mellerud is run by railbuses.

The rock carvings at Högsbyn, Tisselskog are Dalsland’s largest and
most extraordinary ancient site and also one of the largest in the
country. The site includes more than 50 rock areas with more than 2,500
Bronze-Age carvings. 3,000 years ago these symbols were chipped into
the soft stone and it is believed that Högsbyn was a sacred location,
used for religious ceremonies. Close by is an old farmhouse with café
and exhibit and you can book a guided tour. You can reach Högsbyn by
driving the scenic Brudfjällsvägen road, which runs between Tisselskog
and Håverud. In summer the tourist trains on the Dalsland – West
Värmland railway (Mellerud-Bengtsfors) stop at Tisselskog, and the
passenger boat M/S Dalsland makes daily trips to the rock carvings at
Högsbyn.
