Sunnamo Market
Experience a market the old way!
ImageAugust 2,  Sunnamo Market, Sunnanå, Mellerud

On August 2 the market of Sunnamo is reborn with all the different attractions that belong to a real old-fashioned market. People dressed in old-fashioned clothes, animals, musicians and lots of people.

This year the market celebrates the Home Coming Year 2008 with a special surprise for all the visitors. We invite you to join us!

Already in 1788, Sunnamo became a market, since the king had decided that burghers and merchants should no longer have monopoly on commerce but farmers, craftsmen and others should also be allowed to sell their products. The first markets were cattle markets. All the farm workers had the day off to go to the market, and it was not always a calm event. Because of all the fighting at the market, people wanted to close it down. Around 1870, the market was moved to the center of Mellerud. At a community meeting in 1892 it was decided that the market was to “forever cease to exist”. At that time noone believed that the market would be reborn again.

In 1983 the market started once again, supposedly by people who did not listen to the decision of 1892. Since then it has been the annual attraction at Sunnanå and a gathering point for the local people, both on the special market day but also in the planning and preparation. The local history organization of Holm and the Committee of Sunnamo are sponsors of the market.
