The tour of Art & Handicraft starts with Håverud |
Are you curious to learn more about the land of your ancestors? The country, the culture in general and your cultural heritage in particular? Why not join us on a voyage of discovery following in their footsteps. We invite you to spend a day touring the province and experiencing the genuine culture and nature of Dalsland.
The tour of Art & Handicraft starts with Håverud, the place where the famous canal builder Nils Ericson invented an ingenious combination of a roadway bridge, a railway bridge and an aqueduct, to get through a challenging area with the Dalsland Canal. Next to the canal are the Canal museum in one of the old houses and Dalsland Center, an exhibition hall for businesses and a tourist information center.
After the walk around the canal and in the area, we enter the bus for a short drive to Dalsland Museum and Art Gallery, beautifully situated on a hill with a sweeping view over the lake. The museum has a collection of Dalsland pieces such as country furniture and copper, a silver collection as well as art by Dalsland masters such as Otto Hesselbom, Olof Sager-Nelson, Sixten Lundbohm and Georg Suttner. A light lunch will be served in Café Bonaparte, housed in the old foundry hotel.
After lunch we enjoy the short boatride with M/S Hamfri, a small steam boat that will take us over the lake to the House of Crafts in Upperud, one of Sweden’s largest handicraft and design shops in size and assortment. Beautifully located by Lake Upperudshöljen, it occupies more than five stories in an old granary. We can enjoy products of about a hundred different craftsmen and woodworkers, most of which are locals, some of whom are regularly present in the house, working on their pieces.
Looking through the House of Crafts, will take some time and make us hungry. The dinner will be served at Håverud Brasserie, a seafood restaurant which is connected to Håverud Rökeri, where fish is cold- or hot-smoked. This smokehouse has more than 50 years’ experience of working with salmon and it ships its goods to local and international customers.
